The sweet hills of the Sabina

Clinging on the peaks of sweet hills, surrounded by green olive groves, the towns of the Sabina offer to visitors the experience of solitary valleys, medieval strongholds and ancient castles.
This itinerary starts at Fara in Sabina, a medieval village that dominates the roman countryside.

The village offers the view of ancient mansions (XIV-XV century) and the church of the Collegiata; you will visit the archaeological museum with preroman and roman materials coming from the whole sabina area.
Leaving Fara, the itinerary comes up to the most remarkable European monastic complex, the Abbey of Farfa.
The monastic complex dates back to VI century on the roman ruins; here you will visit the S. Maria Church (reconstructed in 1492 by Cardinal Orsini over the Carolingian buildings), the courtyard, important frescoes and fine decorations (XVI century) and cosmatesque mosaics dating back to carolingian age.
Inside the crypt you will see roman sarcofaghus (II century); you can visit the ancient library with its precious manuscripts and the ancient herborist where you will find natural cures made with secrets potions.
Leaving Farfa, you can have a typical lunch in a medieval village, Poggio Mirteto, where the gastronomy offers appreciated foods: cheese, bovine and ovine meats, first-rate oils.
The next stage is the Church of S. Maria in Vescovio, the Cathedral of the Sabina cult (1250), surrounded by pinewoods, which take the place of the ancient roman forum, an important market.
Into the roman archaeological site you will visit the ruins of public buildings (forum, basilica, shops, temple and the remains of the amfitheatre).
