Sabina: pathways of archaeology and art
This itinerary starts from Licenza where the Horace's Villa is.
In the peace of the contryside in an environment so different from Rome,
Maecenas, man of culture, gave to his friend, the poet Horatio (34-32
B.C.) a villa to compose lines.
You will visit the Horatian Museum and the ruins of the villa, a house,

baths with mosaics in a forty hectare area,
surrounded by fruit and olive groves.
Leaving Licenza, the next stage is Orvinio, within the Monti Lucretili
Park.
Near the village, dominated by the majestic Malvezzi Castle, you will find
the ruins of the ancient church and abbey of S. Maria del Piano.
After tasting the local products in a typical restaurant at lunch time, we
reach Monteleone Sabino the ancient roman town of Trebula Mutuesca, where
the archaeological museum and the ruins of the forum and the anfitheatre
are situated.
Also worthy of a visit is the medieval village of Monteleone, the Church
of S. Vittoria, Romanesque building of the XII century, founded on the
site of a pre-existing roman temple. |
