East of Ponsacco, in the vicinity of a little village of feudal origin, a large Medicean villa was built by Duke Alessandro in 1533 and terminated under Cosimo I. Defined by a solid, square construction with towers at the corners, this building combines residential and military characteristics. Thus the adjacent buildings not only performed service functions to the villa, they also served as barracks and stables. Following the insurrections of Pisa and the communes of the Valdarno against the Medicis in 1494 and 1530, the villa constituted a stronghold against further attempts at rebellion. Given to Giuliano Gondi by Cosimo I for services rendered to the Medicis, it returned to Cosimo II in 1620; then in 1637, Ferdinando II sold it to Filippo Niccolini, granting him the title of "marchese di Camugliano and Ponsacco." Casa Nova was one of the houses of the large property and it has been remodeled into a comfortable house that can host 6/8 persons. A swimming-pool has been built near the yard.
